Although mental health struggles can sometimes darken our skies, we must always remember that beneath the clouds, sunlight still exists. These rays of hope often shine through in the form of 'glimmers'. Today we will explore the concept of glimmers and how finding them can prove to be beneficial in maintaining mental health.
A 'glimmer' in the context of mental health is a moment that brings you peace, joy, or comfort in spite of your distress or struggle. A glimmer is the opposite of a trigger. They act as reminders that despite the challenging times, there are still elements in life that can bring about happiness and tranquility.
But how do we go about finding these glimmers?
Mindfulness: Being present in the moment helps us to notice glimmers. Too often we are caught up in our anxiety about the future or regret about the past that we fail to recognize the glimmers present in our current situation. Through practicing mindfulness, we can train our minds to identify the positive aspects surrounding us.
Expression: Finding a medium to express your emotions such as journaling, painting, or even talking to someone can reveal glimmers. As you express, you may discover positive facets that were unnoticed before.
Personal Interests: Delving into activities that you personally enjoy is a wonderful way of seeking glimmers. The joy you experience during these activities itself is a glimmer, providing mental respite.
Connection: Maintaining connections with loved ones can generate many glimmers. Emotional support, shared laughter, or an understanding ear can often bring light to your darkest hours.
Finding glimmers is essentially about recognizing and appreciating the positive, however small or transient they may be.
Self-care activities that can potentially lead you to your personal glimmers:
1. Quiet Time: Take a few moments every day to sit quietly. You may meditate, practice mindfulness, or just simply breathe. This peaceful break can revitalize your mind and often brings small moments of clarity and joy.
2. Exercise: Physical activities like jogging, yoga, or even a simple walk in the park are amazing ways to boost your mood. The release of endorphins during exercise can definitely become your 'glimmer'.
3. Creative Pursuits: Engage in art, writing, music, or any form of craft that you enjoy. Creativity can offer solace and a sense of achievement which can act as a beacon of light in your journey towards better mental health.
4. Spend Time with Nature: Embrace the great outdoors, perhaps through gardening or bird-watching. The calming impact of nature can unveil many glimmers of happiness and serenity.
5. Self-Pamper: Take a long bath, read a book, or prepare your favorite meal. Doing something solely for your pleasure can easily become a happy moment or 'glimmer'.
6. Connect: Reach out to your loved ones regularly. Share your thoughts, or laugh over a shared joke. Connection can bring about many glimmers.
Remember, in the quest for glimmers, the most important thing is to do what brings you joy and comfort. These are your personal glimmers and no one can define them better than you. Each stride, each step is noble in the journey of mental health. It's in these moments of finding our unique glimmers that we gather the strength to combat the dark clouds, walking steadfast into the warm sunshine of hope and resilience.
